1. William Hanes was born about 1735 in England. He died in Jul 1788 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

The Heritage of Rutherford County, North Carolina, Volume I, 1984, published by the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County, The History Division, Hunter Publishing Co., Winston-Salem, North Carolina, No. 364, Pages 255-56 - William and Sarah Haynes were living in Rutherford County, North Carolina before 1785. Their nine children: John, Mary Stice, William, Sarah, Hezekiah, Henry, Eli, Rachel, and Levi, were named in William's will dated 05-29-1788 and proved in July court that same year. The family lived on a 100-acre tract of land on the waters of Cove Creek; William willed this to his wife Sarah during her lifetime, then it was to go to his youngest son Levi. Henry and Eli were given a 200-acre tract on the flat Branch of Cove Creek to be equally divided between them. Hezekiah received 50 acres on the "south side of Chalk Hill Mt on both sides of Cove Road that leads from Hampton's to the Cove." William Jr's legacy was a tract of land "including the plantation where he now lives. "Evidently his oldest son John has already received his share of land, although there was no mention of this in the will, and the only indication of a land transaction involving John is found in the April 1795 court minutes when William Graham proved a deed from John Haynes to James Irvine. John is listed in the 1785 tax list along with his father and brother-in-law Philip Stice, who married his sister Mary. William Haynes Jr. and Philip Stice are included in the 1790 census each with a wife and three children - two girls and a boy. Hezekiah and the younger children, all under the age of sixteen years, were living with their mother. Sarah, the second daughter, married a Mr. Jones who died before 1800 leaving her with a daughter over the age of ten. Eli Haynes married Elizabeth Cook 26 Mar 1802. Levi Haynes died before he could inherit the 100-acres bequeathed to him at his mother's death, and on 17 Feb 1805 five of the heirs sold their interest in this land to their brother Hezekiah. These were William Haynes, John Crook who married Rachel Haynes, Sarah Jones, Philip Stice and Eli Haynes. Hezekiah Haynes and his mother Sarah Haynes then sold this land to John Ledbetter on 6 Mar 1805. About his time a number of people from the Carolinas moved to Warren County, Kentucky. John and Henry Haynes were there by 1797; William followed in 1805 and Hezekiah in 1806. Charles Stice, Philip's father, and most of his family came in 1800. Charles died the following year and in his will, dated 26 Feb 1801 and proved December 1801, he left the 150-acre tract to his wife Caty for her lifetime. At her decease she left "the plantation and the whole of my land to my son Philip Stice." Philip deeded this land, which by then was in Edmonson County, to his sons Charles and Philip Stice Jr.

Subj: RE: John Haynes m. Mary Stice abt. 1783. Date: 11/9/2000 8:03:26 AM Mountain Standard Time, From:  MHaynes@kenyon.com (Haynes, Mike) - My understanding of Eli's descendants is based on inference, rather thanany specific primary source reference. As far as the evidence currentlyshows, Eli died without a Will, probably in late 1831. We know thisbased on the appearance on January 7, 1832, of an announcement in theNorth Carolina Spectator and Western Advertiser [of Rutherford Co] byJacob Michael, administrator, of an estate sale to be held at the lateresidence of Eli Hanes, dec'd, 11 miles northwest of Rutherfordton, onJanuary 31, 1832. The personal property list included:horses, cattle, hogs, farming tools, household & kitchen furniture. Other evidence ofEli's death suggests some of his survivors. Based on the Rutherford CoLand Entries, on December 16, 1831, "Wilkison Hanes enters 50 ac onJimmeys Br waters of Mountain Cr; border: land of Elie Hanes deceased'sestate, William Cook's old tract, & land where said Hanes lives; issued."Also, on December 16, 1831, "Moreney Hanes enters seventy five acres ofland situate on the waters of Mountain Creek joining Elie Hanes, Decd andNicholas Ownsby and others." Finally, on December 12, 1831, "John Bradlyenters 640 ac of land situated on Cove Creek and Ceader Creek joiningJohn Ledbetter, Decd lands, Norman Williams and Hanes place." We knowthat an Eli Haynes married a Marena (lots of spellings) Wadkins on 11 Oct1827 in Rutherford Co. I believe she was his second wife, and that hehad several children beforehand with Elizabeth Cook Haynes, who hemarried on 26 March 1802 in Rutherford Co. The evidence for my beliefderives from the Rutherford Co census data for 1830, which shows forfamily #329: Marena Haines has 2201-00131. This suggests either Marenahad children before she married Eli, or took over the care of his. Italso suggests Eli was either incapacitated to a substantial degree, orabsent at the time of the census, since Marena was listed as the head ofhousehold. The name Eli shows up repeatedly in Wilkerson's descendants, and coupled with Wilkerson's land entry next door to Eli, and Eli'sappearance as a bondsman for Wilkerson's marriage to Elizabeth Keeter, suggests either that Eli was Wilkerson's father, or a very favored uncle. We know that all of William's son's, except Eli, had died or leftRutherford County by the time of, or shortly after, Wilkerson's birth inabout 1800. Thus, most of the evidence suggest Eli as Wilkerson'sfather. Eli's other children remain a mystery. Certainly, severalHaynes' appear on Rutherford Co documents in the 1810-1840 time framethat could have been Eli's children. And the 1810 census suggests he hadmany children by Elizabeth Cook. But other than that, I just don't haveany solid leads yet, although I'm working feverishly, in fits and starts,to better identify Eli's descendants. Of course, I'm also anxious todetermine the roots of Eli's parents, William and Sarah Haynes. That'swhy the query regarding John, who married Mary
Stice. Thanks for any help you can provide. Cheers, Mike Haynes

Subj: RE: John Haynes m. Mary Stice abt. 1783, Date: 11/9/2000 9:06:41 AM Mountain Standard Time, From:  MHaynes@kenyon.com (Haynes, Mike) - I have checked at least some of the other Haynes marriages in RutherfordCo prior to 1850, but have not yet verified that I've checked them all.The inventory of Eli's estate is not in the currently available courtrecords (actual or microFilmed), nor is a list of heirs. Lists of heirswere uncommon in North Carolina and Virginia court records until wellafter the Civil War. Instead, it was expected that the bond would insurethat the administrator properly determined the heirs, and provided tothem accordingly. Moreover, unlike Virginia, North Carolina did not havean annual land or personal property tax list (as far as the recordsshow), from which male descendants can be inferred. Thus, it will takesome more strenuous detective work, and quite a bit of luck, to determineEli's descendents with any certainty. Any help you can provide isgreatly appreciated. Cheers, Mike Haynes
