Peter Lehew of Front Royal, Virginia, by James Huston LeHue and Edith Foster, 1967, page 11, On a 1775 census of Dunmore County, Virginia, William was listed with 3 white males under 16, and a total of 5 white females. The names of William Lehew and Francis Lehew appear on a list of men living in the lower district of Dunmore County, Virginia, under the command of Captain Joseph Bowman. This suggests that William may have taken part in Dunmore's War against the Indians. William supplied 350 pounds of beef to the revolutionary army for which on August 29, 1783, the County of "Shanando" authorized payment of 2 pence a pound or a total of 2 pounds, eighteen shillings, four pence. When Peter Lehew, William's father, made his will in 1780, William was named as one of the sons -- to receive 35 acres of land "on the east side of the creek" joining Peter's son Jeremiah's bequest of 35 acres. After Peter's and the witnesses' signatures appears that note "further it is my will and desire as my son William Lehue will not accept of my legacy of 35 acres of land on the east side of the creek I give and bequeath said land to my beloved daughter Elizabeth Lehew." Why William turned down his father's legacy is unknown. Shortly after his father's death, William bought from his sister Elizabeth Lehew the 35 acres of land which had been left to her by her father. In 1793, William Lehew and wife Hannah sold this same 35 acres. In Sep 1792, William leased 71 acres in Frederick County, Virginia, from the Fairfax estates, the lease to run during the "natural lives of Isaac, Spencer, and Cornelius," his three sons. Shortly after, on 12 Oct 1792, William Lehew of Frederick County, Virginia, entered a deed in Wythe County for 123 acres on Reed Creek.
